November 2008 Obituaries

Donald E. Martin

       Donald E. Martin, 76, of Faye Avenue, Marietta, passed away at 6:58 pm on Friday, November 28, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
       He was born on November 25, 1932, in Pleasants County, WV, a son of Clarence and Elizabeth Worstell Martin.  Don had been employed by the City of Marietta Street Department and was a member of the Marietta Church of God.
       On December 24, 1951, Don married Shirley Williams who preceded him in death on February 13, 2006.  He is survived by 3 sons:  Donald Martin, Jr., Bruce (Carol) Martin, Tom Martin; 3 daughters:  Beverly Ward, Sherri Harris, Beatrice Chidester all of Marietta, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his sister Imogene Sinnett.
       In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son Craig, and 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
       Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd, at 1:00 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home.  Burial in East Lawn Memorial Park.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 pm on Tuesday

      

Louis H. Sayger

       Louis Howard “Lon” Sayger, 85, passed away on November 27, 2008, at 5:30pm at Marietta Center.
            He was born on January 21, 1923, in Pleasant County, WV, a son of George Henry and Edith Cory Lamp Sayger.  Lonnie had worked several years at a shipyard in Detroit, Mich.  He was a rivet catcher and also worked for Texaco Oil Co., Taylor, Mich. and construction work and was semi-retired cook at a restaurant in Belpre, OH.
            He is survived by his son Timothy (Tiffany), Kirchoff of Roanaoke, Va, 4 grandchildren, sisters, Glenna Seevers of Marietta and Bonnie (Frank) Stevens of New Matamoras, and brother Jimmie (Bobby) Sayger of Parkersburg and many nephews and nieces.
            In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers:  Ralph, Bill, Robert, Ray, Bennie, and Edward and sisters:  Ada Sayger and Georgia Tice.
            Funeral services will be held 2 pm Sunday, November 30th at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor David Beaver officiating.  Burial will be in Valley Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 pm Saturday until the hour of service.  The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 on Saturday. 

Stella Littleton Vandale

       Stella Elizabeth Littleton Vandale, 75, of Delaware, Ohio, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008, in Delaware.
       She was born on June 19, 1933, a daughter of David Henry and Nina Roberta Schafer Littleton.  Stella was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Milford Center, Ohio.  She was a homemaker.
       Stella is survived by 2 daughters:  Mildred Jean Vandale of Grantsville, WV, and Mary Helena (Roy) Burton of Milford Center, OH, 5 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews, and 3 brothers:  George, Roy and Frank Littleton.
       She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. 
       Funeral services will be held on at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 2nd, at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Roy Burton, her son-in-law officiating. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 am on Tuesday.

Gordon R. Hesson

       Gordon Ray Hesson, 61, a resident of Heartland of Marietta, formerly of Charles Street, Newport, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
       He was born in Newport on September 29, 1947, to Charles F. and Betty Barnhouse Hesson.  Gordon graduated from Newport High School and Salem College in Salem, WV.   He also attended Ohio State and Marietta College.  He taught Junior High classes for 30 years at Caldwell Exempt Village Schools.  Gordon enjoyed model trains, woodworking, weather watching and astronomy.  He was a member of the Newport United Methodist Church, State Retirement System of Ohio and the Mid-Ohio Valley Model Railroad Club of Parkersburg, WV.
       Gordon is survived by his sister, Patsy Jean Brilliant and her husband, Don, of Newport, niece, Susan Little, and her husband, Kevin of Newport.
       He was preceded in death by his parents.
       Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 1st, at 2:00 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Byron Bufkin officiating.  Burial will be in Newport Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 6:00 pm on Saturday until the hour of the service.  Family will be present on Saturday from 6 until 8 and on Sunday from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8. 

Norman R. Morris

       Norman R. Morris, 83, of Schoolhouse Road, Little Hocking, Ohio, passed away at 12:16 pm on Monday, November 24, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
       No visiting hours will be observed and a memorial service will be held at a later date.  McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Barbara J. McCauley

                   Barbara J. McCauley, 85, of Warren Chapel Road, Marietta, passed away on Friday, November 21,2008, in Columbus.
            She was born in Constitution, Ohio, on February 9, 1923, a daughter of Freman and Junia Hinton Morgan.  Barbara was a homemaker.
            On May 3, 1941, she married Clarence R. McCauley who preceded her in death on July 28, 1981.  She is survived by a son and a daughter:  David R. (Sharon) McCauley of Waterford and Carolyn Conner of Marietta; 7 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 4 great, great grandchildren, her brother Royden (Hazel) Morgan of Florida and a several nieces and nephews.
            In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepfather Joseph Wilson, 10 brothers and sisters and son-in-law Dean Conner.
            Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 11:00 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with burial in East Lawn Memorial Park.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon until the hour of the service.

Keith Davis

       Keith Davis, 55, of Marietta, died from an apparent heart attack on November 17, 2008. 
       He is survived by his brother Jim Falkenberg and wife Carolyn, niece Stephanie Hall and nephew Brian Falkenberg.
       He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma Falkenberg.
       Visitation will be held on Friday, November 21st, from 6 until 8 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home.

Mary J. Mills

       Mary J. Mills, 86, of Colegate Drive, Marietta, passed away at 2:00 am on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at Heartland of Marietta.
       She was born on February 9, 1922, in Marietta, a daughter of Sherman and Myrtle Hill Ripley.  Mary had been employed at The Hotel Lafayette.
       On February 26, 1940, she married Joseph Mills who preceded her in death on August 13, 1968.  She is survived by 1 son and 1 daughter:  Stan (Pam) Mills of Marietta and Pam (Roy) Tilton of Lowell; grandchildren:  Maria, Jenny and Stephenie Mills, Mark and Marcia Tilton; great grandchildren:  Shelby, Samantha and Sarah Tilton and Ollie, Sofia and Gabriel Fonseca.
       She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin sons, Dennis and Donald Mills, and 2 sisters. Audrey Wright and Carmen Covey.
       Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 22nd, at 11:00 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Lyzenga officiating.  Burial will be in Olive Green Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 until 8.

Lawrence “Dude” Wheeler

       Lawrence “Dude” Wheeler, 65, of Marietta died at 1:45 pm on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at his home.
       He was born on July 12, 1943, in Marietta, a son of Perry Dale and Virginia Claire Watters Wheeler.  He had been employed in construction as an industrial painter.  He was a member of the Army Reserves and The National Guard.  Dude was baptized in the Baptist Church.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and his family.
       Dude was married to Patricia Martin who survives with 2 daughters and 1 son:  Tami (Paul Wallace) Wheeler of Belpre, Connie Lang of Marietta, Bradley (Denise) Wheeler of Johnstown, Ohio; 8 grandchildren:  Jonathan and Scotty Wheeler, Erica Barnum, Audrianna, John and Joe Lang, Lawrence Zeus Wheeler, Amber Wheeler; 4 great grandchildren:  Cameron, Hailey, Donavon and Nevaeh Wheeler.  Also surviving is his brother Larry (Shirley) Wheeler of Marietta, sister Katherine (Alf) Mugrage of Little Hocking, 2 special friends, Jami Seagle and Todd Prtichett.
       He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers:  Robert and Daniel Wheeler.
        Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 21st, at 10:30 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Keith Kapple officiating.  Burial will be in Lynch Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 2:00 pm on Thursday. 

Maggie Daugherty

       Maggie Jane Kellar Martin Daugherty, 83, of Marietta,  passed away on November 16, 2008, at her home with her loved ones around her.
       She was born in Doddridge County, WV, on March 18, 1925, to James Clark and Sylvia Gaye Gaskins Kellar. 
       Maggie is survived by 4 daughters:  Patricia (Dude) Wheeler, of Marietta, Sue (Mel) LaBounty of North Carolina, Betty (Fleddie) Wall of Marietta and Rose (Jim) Reed of Marietta, 2 daughters-in-law:  Deana Martin and Kimberly Martin of North Carolina, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, 4 step children:  Glen, Ralph and Roger Daugherty and Connie Mullens.
       She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 husbands, George Martin and Chester Daugherty, 2 sons, James Clark Martin and John Robert Martin, stepson James Daugherty, brother William Kellar and sister Betty Archer.
       Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 10:30 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral home with burial in Lynch Cemetery.  Friends may call after 2:00 pm on Tuesday.  The family wishes to thank the Hospice team and requests donations may be made in Maggie’s honor to Hospice, 210 N. Seventh St., Marietta. 

Wretha M. Batson

       Wretha M. Batson, 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 8:25 am on November 10, 2008, in Harmar Place following a short illness.
       She was born on July 13, 1919, in Liberty Township to John and Arminda Greathouse Hayes.  She resided her entire life in the Marietta and Reno areas.  She enjoyed hearing stories about missionaries.
       She was married on August 15, 1946, to Clyde D. Batson who preceded her in death on March 2, 1993.  She is survived by one daughter, Debra (Roy) Williams of Dublin, TX and a special niece/daughter, Vicky (Larry) Grosklos of Lowell and several other nieces and nephews and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 5 sisters and 3 brothers.
       Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 14th at 10:00 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Don Teubert officiating.  Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 3:00 pm on Thursday until the hour of the service.  Memorial donations may be made to:  W. B. World Missions, c/o Marietta Baptist Temple, 1670 Lynch Church Road, Marietta. 

Ruby J. Wolfe

       Ruby J. Wolfe, 97, of Hanes Trailer Park, Lowell, passed away at 6:10 am on Sunday, November 9, 2008, at Harmar Place.
       She was born on September 12, 1911, in Glenville, WV, a daughter of Hyman Wiant and Zanna Boone Wiant.  She was the great, great, great granddaughter of Daniel Boone.  Ruby was a member of Lowell United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
       On December 26, 1934, she married Oral Wolfe who preceded her in death on January 8, 2001.  She is survived by 1 son and 2 daughters:  Shirley Leon (Regina) Wolfe and Eileen (Dean) Gerber of Marietta and Barbara (Bill) Smith of Lowell, grandchildren:  Mike Wolfe, Bill (Lisa) Wolfe, Karen (Bernie) Schwendeman, Terry (Catherine) Wolfe, David Gerber, Sandy (Mark) Addison, Vickie (Scott) Miller, Jeff (Amy) Smith, Cheryl (Ronnie) Warren, Danny Wolfe, 24 great grandchildren, 7 great, great grandchildren, daughter-in-law Annabelle Wolfe, several nieces and nephews, and her dog “Toby”.
       Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 2 sons, Robert and Gary Wolfe, sister Mary Barr, brother Rymer Wiant, and 2 half sisters, Ethel Gainer and Ola Wolfe.
       Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 12th, at 11:00 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Debbie Malec officiating.  Burial will be in Valley Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 pm on Tuesday until the hour of the service. 

 

Pearl E. Denton

       Pearl E. Denton, 83, of Silver Globe Road, Marietta, passed away at 11:30 am on Sunday, November 9, 2008, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
       He was born on June 18, 1925, in Marietta a son of John H. and Ella M. Wagner Denton.  Pearl had been employed by Warren Township Trustees as Road Foreman, was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during WWII and receiving the Purple Heart.
       On October 9, 1948, he married Alice May Luckwell who preceded him in death on September 22, 1998.  He is survived by 2 sons and 1 daughter:  Duane Denton of Marietta, David (Phyllis) Denton of Fleming, Sheila (John) Crow of Stockport, special niece Paula Colyer, 6 grandchildren:  Rachel Flesher, John Young, Jr., James Allen Young, Justin Denton, Christy Denton, James Everson; 11 great grandchildren:  Daniel, Addis, Becca, Maddy, Harlan, Jr., Austin, Gabrial, John III, Jackson, Madison, Shauna.  Also surviving are 2 sisters and 1 brother:  Gladys Weppler, Theadore Denton and Shirley Sayers.
       He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 2 great grandsons Daniel and Christopher, 3 brothers Richard, Leo, Paul and sister Marlene Huck.
       Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 12th, at 2:00 at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with burial in Tunnel Cemetery with full military rites. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2:00 pm on Tuesday.

Mary M. Binegar

       Mary M. Binegar, 74, of Long Run Road, Sycamore Valley, passed away at 4:40 pm on November 3, 2008, at Universtiy Hospital in Columbus.
       She was born on September 14, 1934, in New Matamoras, OH, to Clark L. and Margaret I. Shook Busch, Sr.
       On February 26, 1955, she married Raymond Binegar who survives with 2 sons, 2 daughters and 1 step daughter:  Raymond Eugene (Judy) Binegar, Jr. of New Matamoras, Randy Dean ( Barbie) Binegar of Logan, Ohio, Barbara Jean (Aaron) Porter of Sycamore Valley, Dianna Lynn Binegar and friend John Parks of Lower Salem, Darlene (Jim) O’Brian of Fulda, OH, 7 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 11 great, great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren.  Also surviving is her brother Earl (Joan) Busch of New Matamoras.
       She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers:  Jim and Junior Busch and sister Virginia Morris.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 7th at 10:30 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Dirk Hall officiating.  Burial will be in Newport Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 pm on Thursday until the hour of the service.

Harvy B. Banks

            Harvy B. Banks went to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday (November 1, 2008) at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge, LA.      He was born on February 14, 1945, in Vicksburg, MS to Doris Lewis Banks and the late David Banks, Sr.
            Harvy was a graduate of Trott Vocational High School in Niagara Falls, NY.  After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.  He worked for the Veterans Administration in a number of positions.  Harvy was also a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5108 in Marietta, OH. 
            An avid reader of western novels, Harvy was also known for his generosity and close-knit ties to family and friends.  Helping out and being there for others was always a priority.  His heart was always in the right place.  Sonny, you will greatly be missed.
            Harvy is survived by his mother, Doris Banks of Marietta, OH; daughter, Yvette F. Banks and grandson Jaylin C. Banks of Atlanta, GA; step-son, Cornelius (Hope) Crockett and step-grandsons Dontá, Christian, and Cameron of Houston, TX; sisters, Carol J. Brewer of Niagara Falls, NY; Janice M. Banks of New York, NY; Betty A. Banks-Burke of Hudson, OH; Lily M. Banks of Pickerington, OH; and Vickie L. (Melvin) Reed of Coppell, TX; five nephews; two great-nephews; two great-nieces; a special friend, Cheryl Harris and many uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.
            Harvy was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne; father, David Banks, Sr.; brother, David Banks, Jr.; and sister, Cherie L. Banks.
             Friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, (November 8, 2008) at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be at  1 p.m. with Pastor James Giles officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery with full military rites.   

James E. Douglas

      James E. Douglas, 60, of Neff Ridge Road, Marietta, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 3:30 pm on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge.
      He was born in Akron, Ohio, on December 14, 1947, a son of Carl E. and Mary Elizabeth Bostaph Douglas. He was employed by Cytec at Willow Island.  Jim was a member of Newport Baptist Church where he had been a Trustee and Deacon and a youth leader and Sunday school teacher.  He was a 1965 graduate of Lawrence High School.  He enjoyed sports of all kinds and was an avid fan of Ohio State, Steelers, Jeff Gordon and horse riding, four wheelers, bicycling and the out of doors.  He adored his 2 granddaughters.
      On July 2, 1966, he married Carolyn Edgar who survives with their son Michael A. Douglas of Marietta, 2 granddaughters: Manda and Michaela; 4 brothers and 5 sisters:  Carol (Karen) Douglas, John (Susan) Douglas, Gary (Kathy) Douglas, Raymond (Peggy) Douglas, Joan (Loren) Farley, Mary Antill, Peggy (Bob) Adams, Dorothy (Ted) Barth, Betty ( Andy) Neader, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ann and Tim Carrothers, mother-in-law Dorothy Edgar and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Larry Douglas, brother-in-law Richard Antill, father-in-law John Edgar
.      Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5th, at 11:00 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Reverend Marvin Sallee officiating.  Burial will be in Newport Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday at noon until the hour of the service.
