Mildred Mayhew

       Mildred Grossman Mayhew, 83, formerly of Jaycee Estates, Marietta,  passed away on March 31, 2009, at The Washington County Home.
       She was born on March 24, 1926, in Marietta to Fred and Gladys Tullius Grossman.
       Mildred is survived by her aunt, Marjorie Tullius of Beckley, WV and her cousins, Marilyn Drennen and Ronald Carver both of Marietta and Sharon Smith of Pineyview, WV.
       She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Sidney Mayhew, and her brother, John Grossman, a casualty of WWII.
       Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.  A memorial service will be held at The Washington County Home at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Washington County Home Activities Fund, 845 County House Lane, Marietta. 

Richard E. Hendrickson

       Richard E. Hendrickson, 77, of Belpre passed away at Arcadia Nursing Center at 2:10 am on Thursday, March 26, 2009.
       He was born on September 17, 1931, in Washington County, Ohio, to George and Juanita Almond Hendrickson.  He was retired from Shell Chemical where he was a maintenance supervisor, was a US Air Force veteran of Korean Conflict, was a member of American Legion Post 64 and VFW.  He enjoyed western line dancing and playing bingo.
       On August 3, 1955, he married Marjorie A. Malone who preceded him in death on November 8, 1990.  He is survived by 1 son and 3 daughters:  Richard C. Hendrickson of St. Clairsville, OH, Carma L. (Dale) Chidester and Charmin (Bruce) Alden both of Marietta and Gina (Aaron) Fleming of Belpre, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by one brother, Burton E. Hendrickson of Marietta and one sister, Susan Dearborn of Waterford.
       In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Morehead, infant brother Paul and infant sister Mary.
       Funeral services will be held on Saturday (March 28) at 11:30 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Reverend Keith Kappel officiating.  Burial will follow in Gravel Bank Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Friday after 2:00 with family present on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8.

      

Rose M. Chutes

         Rose M. Chutes, 70, of Marietta, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at 5:50 am atMarietta Memorial Hospital.
         She was born on August 6, 1938, in Gravel Bank a daughter of Hal and Hazel Hendrickson Hart. She graduated from Marietta High School.  Rose had worked as Clerk for the City of Marietta and retired from Kardex Systems, Inc.  She was a 4-H advisor for 8 years in Washington County.
         On January 4, 1958, she married Francis M. Chutes who preceded her in death on January 6, 2009.  She is survived by 2 daughters: Linda Spriggs and Diana (Chuck) Nonnenmacher both of Marietta, son-in-law Dana Braun, 5 grandchildren:  Andrew, Michael and David Braun and Felicia and Torrance Nonnenmacher and one sister, Bessie Hart Schofield.
         She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Harold Hart.
          Friends may call at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 until 9 and Friday morning from 9 until 11.  Graveside services will be held at Gravel Bank Cemetery at 11:30 on Friday morning (March 27) with Pastor Gene Ferrell officiating.  On line condolences may be shared at:  www.mslfuneralhome.com.      

Noel Blaine Dray

       Noel Blaine Dray, 83, of Vienna, departed this life on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, after waging a 15 year battle with cancer.
       He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, and moved to Parkersburg as a young boy.  Blaine was an army veteran of WWII having participated in the European Theatre at Omaha Beach (Normandy), Germany, France, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg and in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre in Okinawa.  He was a member of the Rainbow Division and the 38th Signal-Light Construction Battalion where he was a chief lineman in charge of telephone and telegraph communications.  He also enlisted after the war in the U.S. Navy Reserve at Norfolk, VA.  After the war, he worked for his father at Dray’s Electric Company in Parkersburg and also worked for Allegheny, Monongahela and Appalachian Power Companies.
       In 1950, he became an electrician, joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 968 and soon went to work on construction of the new E. I. Dupont Plant at Washington Works.  He became the General Foreman in charge of construction and retired there in 1989.
       He was preceded in death by his parents Edna Williams Dray and Harry Harrison Dray, two brothers:  Gale and Norman, and most recently by his wife of nearly 50 years, Wanda Longaberger Dray.
       Blaine is survived by their daughter Connie.

Audena E. Newhart

       Audena E. Newhart, 97, of Williamstown, passed away at 11:40 pm on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
       She was born on August 20, 1911, in Calhoun County, WV, to John and Ruby Fox Morgan.  She had taught school in a one-room school in Calhoun County and later was employed by American Viscose.  Audena was a member of Williamstown Presbyterian Church.  She enjoyed painting, reading and the out of doors.
       Audena was married 57 years to Charles Richard “Dick” Newhart who preceded her in death on October 19, 1991. 
She is survived by her son, Allen R. Newhart of Williamstown; two grandsons:  Dr. Richard C. Newhart of Parkersburg and Jeremy Todd Newhart of Williamstown; grandchildren:  Tyler, Trenton, Andrew, and Hannahmarie Newhart; and her sister Joy (Robert) Stevens of Grantsville, WV.
       She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 7 brothers and sisters.
       Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday (March 23) at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home in Marietta. Earl Ray Williams

       Earl Ray Williams, Sr. 68, of Marietta passed away at 4:15 am on Monday, March 16, 2009, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
       He was born on July 5, 1940, in Rinard Mills a son of David L. and Mary Dee Pugh Williams.  Earl had been employed by Richardson Printing.  He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose.
       On April 22, 1961, he married Janet Wilkenson who preceded him in death on August 25, 2008.
       Earl is survived by his children:  Robert Williams, Lori Goodman (Henry Antill), Linda (James) Brooks, daughter-in-law Juanita Frances, grandchildren:  Kristy, Amber, Lori, Carla, Jason, Tiffany, Corey, Ashley and Joslyn, 5 step-grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  Also surviving are 5 brothers and 1 sister.
       He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and his son Earl Williams, Jr. and 1 brother.

Barbara L. White

       Barbara Lynn White, 48, of Vincent, beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend passed away after a long illness at 11:22 pm on March 11, 2009, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
       She was born on November 28, 1960, at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, to Edward T. and Eloise F. Burke White.  She was a 1979 graduate of Warren High School and attended Washington Technical College, graduated from Mountain State College in Parkersburg, WV, graduated from Florida Metropolitan University and was working on her Masters Degree in law from Everest University.  She was a member of the NAACP, Women’s Auxiliary American Legion Post 714 and a member of the Lupus Foundation.  She was a member of Barnett Ridge Wesleyan Methodist Church.  She loved listening to gospel music, her church and her family.
       Barbara is survived by her devoted mother Eloise, brother Steve G. White of Las Vegas, NV, sister Karen A. White of Columbus and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
       She was preceded in death by her father, her paternal grandparents Clarence and Jennie Tate-White and her maternal grandparents Joseph H. and Vesta Chandler Burke.
       Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday (March 17) at 1:30 pm at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Lyons officiating.  Burial will be in Rainbow Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 pm on Monday until the hour of the service.

Kathryn Marie Booth

            Kathryn Marie Booth, 80, of Dalzell pass away at 6:04 pm, on Tuesday March 10, 2009 at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
            She was born on September 23, 1928, in Lowell, to Clarence and Frieda Lauer Payne.  Kathryn was a graduate of Salem-Liberty High School in May 1946.  She was a member of the Waxler Church.
            She was married Lloyd Booth on June 20, 1946 at Marietta, by Rev. H.H. Myers.  After her marriage she lived her entire life in the Dalzell Community.
            Kathryn is survived by her children: Lloyd Booth, Jr. and his wife Diana, Jacqueline Eddy and her husband Max, Marilyn Boston, Judy Mercer and her husband Larry, and Vaughn Booth and his wife Kay.  Also surviving are grandchildren Jerry, Jamie, Justin and Joshua Booth, Chris Eddy, Traci McKitrick, Heather Cook, Bryan and Stephanie Boston and Casey Mercer; and great grandchildren Kourtney, Tanner and Brayden Booth, Jessica and Cameron Booth, Rodney and Andee Cook, Mikal and Gabriel Booth, Ariel McKitrick, Shelby Eddy, Madison and Megan Booth and Mattie Boston.
            In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband on March 6, 1999, and her only sister Geraldine Handschumacher.
            Funeral services will be held 1:30 pm Friday, March 13th at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Lou Verde officiating.  Burial will follow in Waxler Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 pm on Thursday until the hour of service; the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8.

Katherine M. Conner Biehl

           Katherine M. Conner Biehl, 97, formerly of Marietta, died Monday (March 9, 2009) in Homeland at Harrisburg, Pa.
           She was born Aug. 8, 1911, in Marietta, a daughter of the late Beamer Plummer and Katherine Wetz Conner. Katherine was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church, Marietta. She enjoyed traveling, was an avid quilter and a good cook, loved animals and was a wonderful mother.
           Surviving are a daughter, Katherine A. Siddall of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a son, John E. Biehl of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kelly Siddall of Mechanicsburg, Karen Siddall of York, Pa., and Robert W. Biehl and John D. Biehl, both of Columbus; three great-grandchildren, Amber Biehl, Robert E. Biehl and John R. Biehl, all of Columbus; two nieces; and one nephew.
           Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday (March 14, 2009) at the McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home, Marietta, with the Rev. Tom Hendershot officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Marietta. Viewing will be one hour prior to the services Saturday at the funeral home.
           Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, 90 Mount Tom Road, Marietta, Ohio 45750.

Edna C. Perry

           Edna C. Perry, 86, of Marietta passed away Sunday, March 8, 2009 at her home.
            She was born September 30, 1922 to the late Watson and Gertrude Francis Smith.
            She was a graduate of Marietta High School. She married Romeo E. “Bo” Perry on June 30, 1942.  She was a homemaker and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  She enjoyed dancing, camping, traveling and spending time with her family and faithful companion, Peppie.
            She is survived by two daughters Norma Jean Corp and her husband Arthur of Whipple, and Carol Diane Deming of Marietta; three grandchildren; Patrick Deming (Margot) of Springfield MN, Lisa Hill (Robert Jr.) of Whipple and Diane Rodgers (Ron) of Glouster; five great grandchildren; Monica and Trevor Deming and Katie, Rachel and Laura Rodgers; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Romeo E. “Bo” Perry on December 24, 1998.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Albert “Smitty” Smith and two sisters Katherine Morgan and Freda Smith.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 am on Thursday March 12th at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Father Richard Heller officiating. Burial will follow in Valley Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday at 2 pm until the hour of service, with the family present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8.

Wilbert "Wib" Wilson Cooper

       Wilbert "Wib" Wilson Cooper, 86, of Marietta died Thursday (March 5, 2009) at Marietta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
       A lifelong resident of the area, he was born at Tunnel on Nov. 5, 1922, to John M. and Martha Ann Dalrymple Cooper.
       On May 5, 1949, he married Wilma Chute Cooper, who preceded him in death on June 20, 2005. He is survived by one daughter, Sue Ellen McNutt-Cooper Bishop of Marietta; a grandson, Todd Wilson Bishop of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Cogan Wilson James Bishop and Catterina Shalee Bishop of Minerva, Ohio; four sisters, Hazel Lane (Robert) Garrett, Mildred Elliott (Bud) Dawson, Virginia (Dale) Huck and Alfreda Huck, all of Marietta; nine nieces and 19 nephews; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
       He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; four brothers, Pearl, Ray, Roy and Leonard; two sisters, Florence Cooper and Alberta Carpenter; a son-in-law, James Bishop; seven brothers-in-law; five sisters-in -law; and several nieces and nephews.
       In January 1984 he retired from Labor Local 639. At the time of his retirement, he had been employed by Catalaytic Construction Co. at Shell Chemical, Belpre, for 25 years. He was at Shell the day ground was broken for the plant construction and continued with Catalaytic in plant maintenance until his retirement. He also had worked on the construction of both Ohio power plants at Waterford and Conalco at Hannibal. He joined Local 639 in 1953 where he held various offices, including executive board member for 56 years. Prior to 1953 he had also been employed as a blacksmith at Acme Fishing and Tool, Parkersburg, and at Ideco at Marietta.
       He served in the United States Navy from 1944 through 1946 as a fireman first class on the United States LST 845, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific area campaign. He was a member of American Legion Post 64 and VFW Post 5108.
       He was a very devoted husband and family man, who also enjoyed his many friends. He was a person who saw good in everyone, and no one was a stranger to him for long. He not only made it a point to talk with everyone, he was also willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need.
       Wib was an avid outdoorsman. His favorite sport was coon hunting and raising and training coon dogs, talking to his many friends about the hunts and dogs, and reading the stories of coon hunts in the various magazines he took. He was at his happiest when he was hunting, fishing, riding his ATV or simply walking in the woods.
       By Wib's choice there will be visitation only on Saturday (March 7) from 2 until 9 p.m. at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home. There will be no service. Private burial will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Sandra J. Waite

       Sandra Jean Waite, 63, of Marietta passed on to be with God at 9:30 pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Arbors.
       She was born on January 24, 1946, in Peoria, IL, to Herschel and Viola Compton Davison.  She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  She enjoyed quilt making, cooking for others, driving and sight seeing and being with her children.  She was a volunteer with hospice.
On April 24, 1986, she married Jerry Paul Waite, Sr. who survives with her mother, Viola, and 4 children:  Jerry Paul Waite, Jr., Michael Patrick and wife Derinda Sage, Michelle Rene and husband Timothy Noel Gillenwalters, and step daughter Caroline Emerick, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, brother, Les (Vicki) Davison and half brother, Raymond (Trudy) Davison.
       Funeral service will be held on Friday at 10:00 am at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with burial in Lynch Cemetery. 
She was too young to be taken so soon.  Good bye Mom, you were my inspiration.  You will be missed more than you can imagine.  Donations may be made to:  Home Nursing and Hospice, 210 N. Seventh St., Marietta 45750.

Florence M. Shari

       Florence M. Shari, 79, of Marietta passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009, at Marietta Center.
       She was born on March 15, 1929, a daughter of the late Frank and Margaurite Traubel.  Florence was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.
       On October 14, 1950, she married James H. Shari, Sr. who preceded her in death on September 16, 1999.
       Florence is survived by one daughter and 2 sons:  Joyce (George) Bollard of Barto, PA, James (Lori) Shari, Jr. of Marietta, Jeffrey (Rochelle) Shari of Cincinnati, grandchildren:  Jennifer (Tom) Jump, Aaron Bollard, Corinne Bollard, Denise (Josh) Drespling, Steven Shari all of Pennsylvania, Christina (Chris) McMahon of Marietta, Kristen Shari and Brendon Shari of Cincinnati, Mike Shaver and Justin Dieffenbach of Pennsylvania, great granddaughter Autumn Lynn Drespling and a great grandson due in May, Kingston James McMahon.
       Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday (March 6) at Grace Baptist Church in Devola with Pastor Hayes officiating. Norma J. Hill

       Norma J. Hill, 81, of Shamrock Drive, Marietta passed away Sunday March 1, 2009 at The Arbors of Marietta.
       She was born June 1, 1927, at Bens Run, WV, to the late Baird and Mabel Woodford Koon.        She was a 1945 graduate of Marietta High School. She was a homemaker and had been employed at Hart's Family Center for a time. Norma enjoyed her family, baking and shopping.
       She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Kenneth L. Hill to whom she was married on October 1, 1946; her three sons, James (Rita) Hill of Marietta, David (Malorie) Hill of Jacksonville, FL, and Craig Hill of Marietta; one granddaughter, Megan (Greg) Gault of Marietta; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Ethan Gault; one sister, Jean Pickens, one brother, Baird Koon and his friend Sally Voll, all of Marietta and several nieces and nephews.
       In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Sally Angelillo.
       Services will be held on Wednesday (March 4) at 10:30 amat McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with The Reverend Don Archer officiating.  Burial will follow atEast Lawn Memorial  Park. Family will greet friends on Tuesday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00.

Virginia G. Bennett

       Virginia G. Bennett, 88, of Devola, Ohio, passed away on March 1, 2009, at Selby General Hospital at 1:15 pm.
       She was born on October 31, 1920, in Calhoun County, Big Bend, WV, a daughter of the late John and Lora Richards Kellar.  She attended Brooksville Elementary School in Big Bend.  She was a member of Fifth Street Church of Christ in Beverly and was a homemaker.
       On September 15, 1946, she married Marcellus Bennett at Grantsville, WV, who preceded her in death on November 29, 1991.
       She is survived by one sister, Rosalie Rea of Marietta, brother-in-law William G. Bennett of Belpre and a nephew Larry Kendall who resided with her, and several other nieces and nephews.
       She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers:  Therman Kellar, Richard Kellar, Charles Kellar, infant David Kellar and sisters:  Lara Kellar, Hazel Kellar Kendall.
